It’s Fasting Season (Post 7): Fasting, Weeping, and Mourning by Dr.J.

Joel 2:12 (KJV) 12 Therefore also now, saith the Lord, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:

“That is why the Lord says, ‘Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning’” (Joel 2:12, NLT). When we look at Joel 2:12, the Lord says for Judah to turn to Him with all their hearts, with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning. In this verse, God spoke to Judah through the prophet Joel. The verse signifies that Judah needs to turn to God. This verse also shows that Judah somehow must have turned away from Him God. I don’t know why the Holy Spirit prompted you to fast this season and I don’t know why you obeyed His promptings to fast. Could it be that you are fasting because you too, like Judah, have turned away from God in disobedience? You wanted to do what you wanted to do.

  • You had imaginations and high thoughts that were exalted above the knowledge of God.
  • You wanted to make your relationship work using worldly tactics.
  • You weren’t led by the Holy Spirit in your actions but solely acted in flesh.
  • You ran from your relationship or you withdrew out of fear.
  • You tried to force your spouse to change. You gave ultimatums.
  • You abandoned your loved one during a moment of weakness.
  • You were yoked with an unbeliever even after God showed you he wasn’t the one.
  • You had idols that you worshiped instead of the one and true living God. You put people (i.e., your spouse, lover, children, family, or friends) before God.
  • You worshiped your job and money and considered those things to be your livelihood.
  • You spent more time watching television or on social media than you did studying God’s Word and in prayer and meditation.
  • You craved sexual gratification and continuously satisfied your desires. Then you became immune to satisfaction from natural sexual activities and left open doors for stronger sexual demonic spirits to trespass in your body. You engaged in sex with multiple partners at one time, and you engaged in unnatural sexual acts such as homosexuality, pansexuality, transgender, sexually fluid, and beastiality.

In Joel, an ominous black cloud plagued southern Judah without warning. Then locusts ate everything and stripped Judah bare. Whatever sin you were in, maybe you suffered some plagues that caused you to finally pay attention to God’s call for you to turn back to Him. If you’re reading this, no matter what plagued you, you are still alive and you still have a chance to turn, fast, weep, and mourn. But what God warned Judah about, and us through the prophet Joel is that there will be a time in which it will be too late to turn. The good news is we’re fasting. We’re weeping for the horrible, disgusting, sinful things we used to do. We’re mourning the results of our sinful flesh. We’re turning back to God now.

Consider what Joel says in chapter 2, verse 13. “Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead. Return to the Lord your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish” (NLT). God says, it isn’t enough to go through the motions of tearing our garments, wearing sackcloth, and fasting. These are all external acts which should be symbolic of a repentant heart. God knows whether or not our fasting, weeping, and mourning are superficial, showy, and fake. We have to rend our hearts for Him. We have to turn from our wicked ways and not go back. Because of our fast and more importantly because of our changed hearts and transformed lives, God will restore all that the locust stole from us. Our trees will bear fruit again, but our transformation must be real. Dr.J.

It’s Fasting Season (Post 6): Be Sensitive to the Holy Spirit by Dr.J.

“Fasting keeps you sensitive to His Spirit, enabling You to live Holy.” -Jentzen Franklin

The Holy Spirit has something to say to you during this fast, things you haven’t been able to hear Him say because of all the noise of the world, the chatter of sin, and the commotion of self-gratification. But now as you suppress your physical desires, God can unleash His spiritual desires for you through His Spirit. You’ve had questions about what to do about a situation. You’ve been struggling with people being used against you. You’ve dealt with the emotional impact of being abandoned. Your finances are not enough to make ends meet. The enemy is trying to destroy your relationship or he has already. God says continue to sacrifice for intimacy with Him and read His Word and listen. Listen.

In addition, in order to truly hear the Holy Spirit, you must live holy. Holy means “set apart.” You can’t do any and everything during your fast and live a life that is different from the world at the same time. When you fast, you are so in tune with the Holy Spirit that the Spirit can whisper and you can hear Him and turn from the evil you were about to commit. But when you sin, the Holy Spirit can’t communicate with you because sin distorts your hearing and severs your relationship. Sin separates and deafens you too. Not living Holy while fasting is just, well, a diet. Be sensitive to the Holy Spirit so that you can make the most out of your sacrifice for God. Dr.J.

It’s Fasting Season (Post 5): Is It Worth Your Birthright? Dr.J.

What blessings are we giving up because of our desire to eat? In order to gratify our flesh, sometimes we are willing to sacrifice a relationship with God. We want to be fulfilled right now. We want satisfaction no matter what the cost. We want to be pleased no matter who it hurts. Our need is more important than God or anyone else’s. We have a burning desire that can’t be quenched. So we sin. We give up on the fast because we crave food more than God. We cheat on our loved one because she isn’t satisfying any more. We are willing to sell our birthright, the promises of God, at a cheap price and for temporary pleasures. God has plans for you to prosper you and give you hope. God has promises to fulfill through you, in you, and for you. Before you take a bite to eat, before you sleep with her, before you satisfy your flesh, think about this…is it worth my birthright? Dr.J.
Genesis 25:29-34 (ESV) Esau Sells His Birthright
“29 Once when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted. 30 And Esau said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!” (Therefore his name was called Edom.[a]) 31 Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright now.” 32 Esau said, “I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?” 33 Jacob said, “Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.”

Wives, Focus On Your Own Fruit by Dr.Jené Walker

Wives if we walk in the Spirit, then the desires of the flesh won’t prevail in sticky situations with our husbands. The flesh makes us want to check on him, get him back, withdraw, withhold, nag, cheat on him, and ultimately leave him. In the flesh we are jealous, insecure, paranoid, domineering, vengeful, loud, loquacious, and flirtatious.

Walking in the power of the Holy Spirit gives us victory over the flesh. How do we know if we are operating in the Spirit with our husbands? Well if we are in the Spirit, we bear the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. In which spirit are you operating? Your Spirit is known by the fruits you bear. Walk in the Spirit regardless of how he is walking. God is allowing this test and this season for a reason. Crucify your flesh. Die to yourself daily. Focus on God and your fruit, not your husband and his. Jené Elaine Walker

It’s Fasting Season (Post 4): We Don’t Want Any Flesh Dr.J.

Die to Flesh today. There are several occurrences in scriptures in which we lost out on the promises of God because of our insatiable lustful greedy appetites. If we can’t operate in the fruit of the Spirit self-control in our fast it will also be difficult to control other ungodly desires. Exercise self-control today.

God gave the Israelites manna to eat and they complained and whined about not having meat in their freed state. They reflected on their awesome former enslaved state under Pharaoh during which they ate as they pleased. They murmured so much that God gave them so much meat it made them sick.

Be content this 1-day fast, 3-day fast, 21-day fast, 30-day fast or 40-day fast with what God instructs you to eat. The promises He has for you will be worth the sacrifice. Don’t murmur or complain. Be content with what you eat during this intimate time of sacrifice. Dr.J.

Numbers 11:18-20 KJV “And say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow, and ye shall eat flesh: for ye have wept in the ears of the Lord , saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: therefore the Lord will give you flesh, and ye shall eat. Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days; But even a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you: because that ye have despised the Lord which is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?”

It’s Fasting Season (Post 3): Crucify Your Flesh Dr.J.

“You see, fasting means crucifying what I refer to as ‘King Stomach…’ He [God] will provide you with the grace to endure and see the breakthroughs you need to come to pass. However, you will have to choose to dethrone that ‘dictator within…’ It has been said that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Most women have come to know it, but we need to understand that the devil knows it too!”-Jentzen Franklin

The devil knows what fasting releases in the believer’s life. He knows what it means for your marriage, your relationships, your children, your faith, your spiritual wisdom, your vision, and the breakthroughs from the Master of Breakthroughs. So of course, he tempted you to give up the fast all day. Read how the devil has used food from the beginning to get us to disobey God. Think about this account in the Garden of Eden when you’re tempted to eat during the fast. Dr.J.

Genesis 2:8-9, 16-17 NIV “Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. And the Lord God commanded the man, ‘You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.’”

It’s Fasting Season (Post 2): Some Things By Prayer and Fasting Dr.J.

Some of us have been dealing with demonic attacks in our personal lives or with our children or in our relationships. You’ve had these spirits on you so long that it has become demonic oppression. You have prayed. You have studied. You’ve even been saying confessions trying to engage the enemy. Your faith is strong. Why hasn’t there been a change? Jesus said “Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” You are going to have to add fasting to your devotion of prayer to be released from the stronghold of these types of demons.

God bless you as you begin your 1 day, 3-day, 21-day, 30-day, or 40-day fasts. Stay in the Word. Dr.J.

Matthew 17:18-21 KJV “And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.”

Titus 2:7-8 "In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us."
