Matthew 6:2-4 NIV “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
It’s “human nature” to want to “share” when we help others. Social media makes it so easy to publicize our “charitable” and “benevolent” deeds. We saw it vividly during the time when Hurricane Matthew 2016 hit. We all started posting what we were buying and how we were helping people. Jesus said when we publicized it, the honor we received from man will be our reward because He isn’t going to bless that.
We just have to pray and ask God to show us the motives of our hearts because only God knows. Jesus says clearly that no one should know when we’re helping His people and that our giving should be in secret. Why? To guard our hearts of pride and keep our motives pure. We can justify “why” we share what we do for others but God knows the heart. I’m praying now about how to facilitate a corporate social media fast in private. Lord help us to stay humble and follow the instructions in Your Word. Holy Spirit convict us before we do the wrong thing in Jesus’s name! Dr.J.
