Scriptures for Marriage: Stand for Your Marriage by Dr.Jené Walker

God has entrusted me with ministering to His people. One of the strongest areas of attacks from the enemy is in the institution of marriage. A wife asked me a question. She wanted to know how to access the promises about marriage and restoration in the Word of God. I prayed and ask God to give me direction so that I could give direction to His daughter, my sister. The Holy Spirit led me to compile scriptures about what God says about marriage. The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God. We must know what God’s Word says about marriage so that we will be able to stand against the wiles of the enemy and for our marriages in the face of the attacks.

Stay in the Word. Stay in the Spirit. Most importantly, stand for your relationship with God. Beware of making your marriage and your spouse an idol in your life. God hates idolatry. Continue to fight and stand for your marriages as Holy Spirit leads you. Don’t give the enemy your marriage unless God has released you from this marriage because of extreme circumstances. When God releases you, however, don’t be obstinate, defiant, and stubborn and stay and miss out on the life God has for you and cause your spouse to miss out on the life God has for your spouse. The enemy has kept some of us bound to a marriage so that we will lose out on what God really has for us. When Holy Spirit releases you from your marriage, leave immediately. God is not telling us to remain in a marriage of abuse and abandonment. He has given you the signs but you’re staying in the marriage out of disobedience. Listen to the Spirit. I declare and decree that those strongholds that have kept you bound to the marriage out of defiance are demolished in Jesus’s name. Jené Elaine Walker

The Creation of Marriage
Genesis 2:20 (NLT) “He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him.”

God’s Fix for Man’s Loneliness
Genesis 2:18 “Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.’”

God’s Creation: Help Meet for Man- Woman
Genesis 2:23-25 At last!” the man exclaimed. “This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh! She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from ‘man.’” This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame.

A Wife is a Good Thing and a God Thing
Proverbs 18:22 “The man who finds a wife finds a treasure, and he receives favor from the Lord.”

God’s Instructions for Marriage: Sexual Relations
1 Corinthians 7:2-5 But because there is so much sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman should have her own husband. The husband should fulfill his wife’s sexual needs, and the wife should fulfill her husband’s needs. The wife gives authority over her body to her husband, and the husband gives authority over his body to his wife. Do not deprive each other of sexual relations, unless you both agree to refrain from sexual intimacy for a limited time so you can give yourselves more completely to prayer. Afterward, you should come together again so that Satan won’t be able to tempt you because of your lack of self-control. [Exod. 19:15.]

God’s Instructions for Marriage: Framework for a God-Pleasing Marriage
Ephesians 5:21 “And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”

Ephesians 5:22-33 “For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church. As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything. For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word. He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault. In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself. No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church. And we are members of his body. As the Scriptures say, ‘A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’ This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one. So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.”

Philippians 2:3-4 “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.”

1 Thessalonians 4:8 “Therefore, anyone who refuses to live by these rules is not disobeying human teaching but is rejecting God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.”

1 Thessalonians 5:11 “So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.”

Romans 12:16 “In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you.”

Galatians 5:13 “For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.”

Hebrews 3:13 “You must warn each other every day, while it is still ‘today,’ so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God.”

Conflict in Marriage
Ephesians 4:22-32 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy. So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body.  And ‘don’t sin by letting anger control you.’ Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil. If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need. Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.  Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.”

Colossians 3:13 “Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.”

Colossians 3:15 “And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.”

Colossians 4:6 “Let your conversation be gracious and attractive[a] so that you will have the right response for everyone.”

Romans 14:19 “So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up.”

Romans 15:7 “Therefore, accept each other just as Christ has accepted you so that God will be given glory.”

Romans 12:15 “Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep.”

1 Peter 5:5 “In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’”

James 5:16 “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.”

A Marriage That’s Built to Last: Agree Before I Do
Amos 3:3 “Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction?”

2 Corinthians 6:14 “Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness?”

Stay Alert and Stay Faithful
Malachi 2:11-15 “Judah has been unfaithful, and a detestable thing has been done in Israel and in Jerusalem. The men of Judah have defiled the Lord’s beloved sanctuary by marrying women who worship idols. May the Lord cut off from the nation of Israel every last man who has done this and yet brings an offering to the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. Here is another thing you do. You cover the Lord’s altar with tears, weeping and groaning because he pays no attention to your offerings and doesn’t accept them with pleasure. You cry out, ‘Why doesn’t the Lord accept my worship?’ I’ll tell you why! Because the Lord witnessed the vows you and your wife made when you were young. But you have been unfaithful to her, though she remained your faithful partner, the wife of your marriage vows. Didn’t the Lord make you one with your wife? In body and spirit you are his. And what does he want? Godly children from your union. So guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth.”

2 Corinthians 13:5 “Examine yourselves to see if your faith is genuine. Test yourselves. Surely you know that Jesus Christ is among you[a]; if not, you have failed the test of genuine faith.”

What Does Love Have to Do With It?
1 John 3:16-18 “We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters. If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person? Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.”

John 13:34 “So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.”

Romans 12:10 “Love each other with genuine affection,[a] and take delight in honoring each other.”

1 Peter 4:8 “Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins.”

1 John 3:11 “This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another.”

1 John 4:7, 11, 12 “Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us.”

Suffering for Doing Good
1 Peter 3:8 Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters.[a] Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude.
